Best Wooden Toys by Age: A Parent's Guide
When we set up our own playroom, we kept coming back to wooden toys. They feel lovely in little hands, they survive years of enthusiastic play, and they leave plenty of room for imagination. If you're wondering which wooden toys suit your child right now, here's our simple guide, stage by stage.
The ages below are a general guide. Every child develops at their own pace, so always follow the age label on each toy, especially for anything with small parts.
Why choose wooden toys?
• They last. A well-made wooden toy can be passed from sibling to sibling, and often on to cousins and friends.
• They invite open-ended play. Without lights or sounds telling children what to do, a block becomes a phone, a cake or a boat.
• They're calm and tactile. The weight, grain and warmth of wood give little hands something real to explore.
• They fit a Montessori-inspired home. Natural materials and realistic, simple toys are at the heart of the Montessori approach.
Babies (around 6 to 12 months)
At this stage, babies are grasping, mouthing, banging and dropping. Look for chunky pieces that are easy to hold and too big to fit in the mouth. Simple stackers are a lovely first wooden toy: long before your baby can stack the rings in order, they'll enjoy pulling them off and passing them from hand to hand.
Young toddlers (around 1 to 2 years)
Once they're on the move, toddlers love cause and effect: push it, pull it, bang it and see what happens. Chunky knob puzzles build hand-eye coordination and early problem solving, while push-and-pull vehicles keep new walkers busy.
• Animal Puzzle and Farm Puzzle for first shapes and animal names
• Little Train for pushing, pulling and endless trips around the living room
Toddlers (around 2 to 3 years)
This is when imaginative play really takes off. Toddlers love copying what they see you do, so small world toys and simple role play sets are perfect. Animal figurines are wonderful for storytelling, sorting and learning animal names, and they grow with your child for years.
• Mikheev animal figurines for small world play and storytelling
• Avdar Toys stackers and building blocks for building, balancing and knocking down again
Preschoolers (3 years and up)
Preschoolers are ready for more detailed pretend play, early maths and creative projects. Play kitchen sets let them run their own café, while fraction and shape puzzles introduce early number ideas through play.
• Coffee Maker, Vintage Breakfast Tray and Fruit Basket for pretend play
• Little Dentist for role play that makes real dental visits feel familiar
• Fruity Fractions Puzzle for early maths
• Tabletop Easel for drawing and creative play
• Paddle Ball for hand-eye coordination
What to look for when buying wooden toys
• The age label. Toys with small parts are usually marked for ages 3 and up because of choking risk.
• Smooth, well-finished edges with no splinters, and parts that are firmly attached.
• Child-safe paints and finishes. Check the packaging or product details for recognised toy safety standards, such as EN 71 or ASTM F963.
• Room to grow. The best wooden toys are used in new ways as your child gets older.
Caring for wooden toys
• Wipe clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap.
• Don't soak wooden toys or put them in the dishwasher, as water can make wood swell or crack.
• Let them air dry, and keep them out of long periods of direct sunlight to protect the colours.
• Check them now and then for loose parts or rough edges.
Frequently asked questions
Are wooden toys Montessori?
Many wooden toys are a natural fit for a Montessori-inspired home, because they're made from natural materials and are simple and realistic. "Montessori" isn't an official certification, though, so look for toys that are purposeful and let your child lead the play.
Are wooden toys safe for babies?
Yes, when they're well made, suited to your baby's age and used with supervision. Choose chunky pieces with no small parts for babies and young toddlers.
How many toys does my child need?
Fewer than you might think. A small selection that you rotate every week or two keeps play fresh and makes each toy feel new again.
